AiMesh Networking With Asus Routers

Problem

The client recently bought a large home and their single Asus router would not reach every area of the home and it’s out buildings.

Solution

Asus routers have a mesh networking system called AiMesh. This system allows for multiple connected Asus routers to manage network connections. When new devices connect they will be attached to the router that has the strongest signal. If a device (like a phone) is moving around it’s connection will automatically update.

We placed two new routers. One in a bedroom and one in an out building. All the routers were connected via Ethernet cable. One router used a DirecTV Broadband Deca Ethernet to Coax Adapter so we could use the preexisting coax cables in the home for connecting the bedroom router.

Takeaways

• It’s always better to avoid consumer level equipment when building a large network. I usually use Unifi equipment. But if you already have an Asus router this can help you get a Mesh network at minimal cost.

• Asus has have security issues with some of their routers. It important to make sure you are getting updates for all the routers on a regular basis.

• The Deca adapters are very inexpensive but their speed is limited to 100Mbps. This is fine for sharing a residential internet connection. But it not be appropriate for a network where the client devices need to share large amounts of data with each other.
